The Evolution of California Forklifts

With this Blog post, we begin a journey through many postings, that will start with the very beginning of forklifts and provide a complete introduction to this product and technology.  It is our hope, that through these posts, you the reader will become more informed as a forklift operator or forklift owner on the history, types, and functions of this great product.  Today we begin with the beginning and how man has always looked for easier ways of accomplishing difficult strenuous tasks./One can easily think back to the Stone Age man and the invention of the lever. It was Archimedes who finally recognised the importance of the lever and his famous statement "Give me but one firm spot on which to stand and I will move the earth" is well known. We doubt that he was thinking of modern day fork lifts when he said that and indeed it was to be many years before they were developed in the United States.

California forklifts evolved from hoists, which were the primary means of lifting and moving heavy items in the late 1800s. These hoists, essentially chains and winches, gave way to wooden platform trucks around the turn of the 20th century. Soon after, the wooden trucks and their trailers incorporated electric motors and traction batteries.

How to perform fork lift cost analysis in Southern California

Going green is becoming a very politically popular topic these days.  Saving money is an every day topic.

There is little doubt that the world is looking for cleaner and more responsible products to use in nearly every facet of life. That, along with the sudden surge in the cost of petroleum fuels, is making your understanding of the benefits of alternative fuel powered forklifts even more important.  The most viable and readily available technology today is battery operated electric forklifts and they can save you money.

Most consumers have avoided this alternative for many years.  Why? Because the acquisition cost of an electric forklift is much higher than a gas/lpg forklift. Sometimes electric forklifts can cost as much as 30% more than a comparable gas forklift. Unfortunately, this is only one piece of the equations and a very short term view of the total cost of owning a forklift.

Electric forklifts represent nearly 60% of the forklift market today, up from just 45% twenty years ago, and for good reason. Companies in Southern California are doing the cost analysis onf forklifts  As a result, more and more companies are realizing the major benefits of choosing electric forklifts, which can include:
  1. Reduced costs – Fewer moving parts and less heat mean lower operating costs.
  2. Reduced fuel costs – If used appropriately, batteries and chargers cost less than LP, and energy costs are more stable.
  3. Reduced emissions – No output of carcinogens and carbons means improved operating conditions  and better health for your employees.
  4. Improved operator ergonomics – IC engines produce not only emissions, but also vibration and heat, both of which contribute to operator fatigue.
If you are interested in finding out more on this subject, we have the tools you can use to make the comparison and prove it to yourself.

All of these forklift brands are well established and manufactured by major corporations with worldwide presence. So to sort through all the marketing hype and technical jargon, you need to look at a few basic points.

First of all, you need to make sure you are purchasing the correct forklift type for your business application and environment.  There are many types of forklifts and they are designed for specific applications.  You don't want to purchase a diesel powered lift for use indoors and electric lifts outside are not always a good fit.   We will be writing several articles on this blog over the next few months to explain the differences.

How to Charge the Battery in an Electric Forklift

Electric forklifts are powered by industrial batteries. The most common way to charge the battery is to use a charging station, which can service a number of different voltage batteries.
These devices usually have two 8-foot cords that connect to the battery. Newer models are equipped with an automatic charge shut-off, which charges hard for six hours, then at a lower level for the last two hours. The U.S. Occupational Safety Hazard Administration (OSHA) requires workers to wear approved rubber gloves, face mask and apron while charging the forklift battery.Read more:
